The Building Trades Council and the San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council have partnered to operate a Youth Build program, which is sited on the NCPA property. This program is open to young adults 18-24 without a HS Diploma. Those with a GED can enroll and work on converting their GED into an actual diploma.
The program operates in 2 week rotations: 2 weeks in the classroom, then 2 weeks on the job site. The students alternate back and forth for a period of 9-12 months.
The Building Trades Council and the San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council contract with John Muir Charter School for the academic portion. As part of the
hands-on experience of working with tools, the Youth Build students, under the guidance and leadership of the skilled journeymen trades and crafts people of the Building Trades affiliates, are currently renovating the Olivewood Community Center, located adjacent to the NCPA complex. This opportunity to use the skills and techniques learned in the classroom is an invaluable part of these students introduction to careers in the building trades. It also gives them concrete positive proof of their labor.
Youth Build students have also worked on community service projects, such as the building of a greenhouse and hydroponic tables for Crawford High School’s Garden Club and assisted with housing improvements for two brothers in need in Imperial Beach.
The Labor Council provides all tools, work boots, safety equipment, and uniforms for the students as well as certifying them in the Building Trades’ Multi-Craft Core Curriculum, OSHA Safety, First Aid, and CPR. The students in our program also have the opportunity to earn $500/month based on their attendance and participation. The class runs Monday – Friday, 7:30 am – 2:30 pm.
This program is an equal opportunity employer program and auxiliary aids and services are
available upon request by individuals with disabilities and is funded by the Department of Labor.
