Olivewood Clubhouse
An iconic structure that symbolizes the hard-working people of South San Diego County, the Olivewood Club House is over 100 years old. The quality of its construction illustrates the values and skills of the region’s construction trades, who are currently restoring it to its original splendor. Originally built by Warren Kimball as a woman’s club in honor of his departed wife, Flora Kimball, the Olivewood Club House became a meeting place for one of the region’s original women’s organizations. Today, the Club House is a place of comfort, education and entertainment for the masters and apprentices of the region’s building trades. It was recently purchased by the National City Park Apartments to serve as a community center.
The clubhouse has withstood the test and perils of time. Virtually rebuilt in place, it symbolizes second chances at life. It stands adjacent to the apartment complex that provides affordable and comfortable lifestyles to a vibrant community of families who are dedicated to maximizing the helping hand that has been provided by the San Diego Building and Construction Trades Council. The considerable renovations are excellent learning experiences for the Youth Build Program and the re-opening is projected for the summer of 2015. It will be a fitting return to glory for a building that has certainly passed the test of time.
